“While it is said: ‘Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.’”
— Hebrews 3:15 (NKJV)
Every day is an opportunity to listen to God—but not every heart is willing to hear. Hebrews 3:15 stands as both an invitation and a warning: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
God still speaks—through His Word, through His Spirit, and through circumstances—but our response determines whether His voice softens or hardens us. The danger is not that God stops speaking; the danger is that we stop listening.
Today — God’s Call Is Always Present
The verse begins with one urgent word: Today.
God’s invitation is not reserved for a future moment when life feels easier or more settled—it is for now. Every “today” is a fresh opportunity to respond to Him in faith, obedience, and surrender.
Yesterday’s faithfulness does not excuse today’s neglect, and tomorrow’s intentions cannot replace today’s obedience. God speaks in the present tense because faith must be lived daily.
Don’t wait for a better day to listen—today is the day to hear and respond.
If You Hear His Voice — God Is Still Speaking
The voice of God is not reserved for prophets or extraordinary moments. It is available to every believer through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.
The same Spirit who inspired Scripture now illuminates it, guiding, convicting, and comforting God’s people. When you open the Bible, you are not merely reading ancient text—you are encountering the living voice of God.
But Scripture is clear: “If you will hear.” God speaks, but He never forces. His voice requires a willing heart. Many hear the words of truth, but only those who listen with humility are changed by them.
Do Not Harden Your Hearts — The Danger of Resistance
This warning reaches back to Israel’s story in the wilderness. Though they witnessed God’s miracles, they complained, doubted, and refused to trust Him. Over time, their hearts became hardened.
A hardened heart is not one that has never heard truth—it is one that has heard truth but stopped responding to it. Conviction becomes irritation. Sensitivity fades into stubbornness. The more the Spirit’s prompting is resisted, the easier it becomes to ignore.
That is why Scripture urges urgency: if you sense God speaking, respond now. Delay hardens what obedience would soften.
The Rebellion — Learning from Israel’s Example
The “rebellion” refers to Israel’s refusal to enter the Promised Land (Numbers 14). They believed what they saw more than what God said. Their unbelief cost them the very inheritance God had prepared.
The same pattern still applies. When fear, pride, or apathy overrides obedience, believers miss the fullness of what God desires to do in and through them. Faith keeps the heart open; rebellion quietly shuts the door.
The Takeaway
God is still speaking—the question is whether we are still listening.
Every day, God invites His people to trust Him, follow Him, and live out their faith in practical ways. The right time to respond is not “someday.” It is today.
If you hear His voice through Scripture, conviction, or the gentle prompting of the Spirit, do not delay. Keep your heart soft, your ears open, and your life ready to live out your faith each day.
