Last night, I was making dinner for my wife and me, and struggling with the need for a little hope. In the middle of something ordinary, I found myself carrying something heavy. My body has been dealing with pain from a surgery, and it felt like pressure was coming from every direction—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

As I stood at the stove, the Holy Spirit suddenly brought a Scripture flooding into my mind:

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” —Psalm 42:5 (ESV)

I began to meditate on it while pouring my sauce over the salmon. And something shifted. My heart started to come alive again as I felt the presence of God fill the room.

I walked into the den where my wife was, and on the television was a video playing with soft worship music and Scripture on the screen. And there it was again—the same verse: Psalm 42:5.

God was not whispering. He was confirming.

A Song Born in Distress

Psalm 42 was written by the sons of Korah—worship leaders. This wasn’t written from a mountaintop moment. It was written from a place of distance, pressure, and longing.

The psalmist was likely far from Jerusalem and the temple, cut off from corporate worship and surrounded by opposition. The pain wasn’t just circumstantial—it was spiritual.

And yet, in the middle of it all, something powerful happens.

He begins to speak—not to God—but to his own soul.

The Turning Point: Preaching to Yourself

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?”

This is not denial. This is confrontation.

The psalmist acknowledges the weight—but refuses to let his soul stay there. He redirects it:

“Hope in God.”

This is the moment everything begins to shift.

Faith is not always loud. Sometimes it’s a quiet but firm decision to speak truth to your own heart when everything around you says otherwise.

When the Soul Is Heavy

There are moments in life when:

  • Your body is tired
  • Your mind is overwhelmed
  • Your circumstances feel relentless

In those moments, waiting for your feelings to change is not enough.

You must speak to your soul.

As I stood over that stove, I did exactly that. I spoke to my soul. And almost immediately, I felt peace rise, joy return, and the presence of God settle over me again.

Your Declaration Today

If you are facing something today—whether it’s in your health, your mind, your finances, your family, or your future—I want to encourage you:

Speak to your soul.

Tell it where to go.
Tell it what to believe.
Tell it to hope in God.

Because you will come through this.
You will overcome what is pressing against you.
And you will praise Him again.

  1. What is currently weighing down your soul, and have you been honest about it before God?
  2. What truth from Scripture can you begin to speak over your situation today?
  3. What would it look like for you to actively “hope in God” in your current circumstance?
